Dems Play Politics With Racial Fire

The Democratic Party is tip-toeing onto the thin end of the pond with their tactics against Michael Steele. Here’s what I’m talking about:

Cardin, a dry and detailed-oriented career legislator, was upstaged at his Upper Marlboro event Sunday by the irrepressible Rep. Steny Hoyer, who did a comedy routine about the event’s host, Cool Wave Water, and told the audience that Steele had had “a career of slavishly supporting the Republican Party.”

I’d doubt that blacks saw that as humorous. Dictionary.com defines slavishly this way:

1. of or befitting a slave: slavish subjection.
2. being or resembling a slave; abjectly submissive: He was slavish in his obedience.

Somehow I’d doubt that blacks think it’s funny to say that a black man “resembles a slave” or deserves treatment “befitting a slave.” In fact, I’m betting that Mr. Steele will benefit from Hoyer’s insensitive comments. Consider this:

Referring to the historic scarcity of blacks in top Maryland offices, Steele said, “Does that translate into votes for me? I don’t know. That’s my job to convince them that I’m worth the risk in November.” Prince George’s County, with a two-thirds African-American population, is the state’s second-biggest source of Democratic votes. It is also Steele’s home turf and he told me Saturday he hopes to get 35 percent of the vote there, about 15 points better than GOP candidates historically have performed there.

If Mr. Steele gets 35% of St. Georges County, Cardin’s toast. Considering the support that Steele got from Michael Mfume, Kweisi Mfume’s son, and from Russell Simmons when Simmons campaigned with Steele, I’d say that Steele’s got the best chance of beating a Democrat in Maryland as any Republican has had in the last 30 years.

It’s worth noting that there’s a message getting sent by the Democrats nominating white Ben Cardin and the GOP nominating a black man for the 2nd time in a row for statewide office. Don’t think that that isn’t getting noticed.

Note: The county name is Prince George’s, not St. Georges.

The Democrats in Maryland have said things in the past to offend Michael Steele. It goes from the Baltimore Sun to the President of the State Senate. Hoyer’s remarks are the latest in a series. I wonder when the voters of Maryland will see just how much the Maryland Democratic Party takes them for granted?

I used to know Michael Steele. He is an intelligent, funny, down-to-earth, genuinely nice guy. For a Republican to win in Maryland, it’s a tall order (witness Gov. Ehrlich’s troubles in the polls as well). But I hope they pull it off.

By the way, you might want to note just how lopsided the Maryland General Assembly is in terms of Democratic Party domination. In the past four years, the Dems have gotten really arrogant, and I hope the voters punish them for it. Unfortunately, real reform won’t come until after 2010, when redistricting will take place. Maryland will need a Republican Governor then, too, in order to end the system of “three delegates to a district” that has helped the Democrat stranglehold exist for so long now.
