Caught Red-Handed
Filing: Tape Shows Lawmaker Taking Money
The headline says it all. Here’s what and who they’re talking about:
A congressman under investigation for bribery was caught on videotape accepting $100,000 in $100 bills from an FBI informant whose conversations with the lawmaker also were recorded, according to a court document released Sunday. Agents later found the cash hidden in his freezer.
There’s only man that fits that description: William Jefferson.
The affidavit says Jefferson is caught on videotape at the Ritz-Carlton as he takes a reddish-brown briefcase from the trunk of the informant’s car, slips it into a cloth bag, puts the bag into his 1990 Lincoln Town Car and drives away. The $100 bills in the suitcase had the same serial numbers as those found in Jefferson’s freezer.
There’s an old saying that goes “All cash looks the same”, which is true. That said, each bill has a different serial number on it. I’d say Representative Jefferson’s as good as convicted.
Jefferson’s lawyer, Robert Trout, contended that the prosecutors’ disclosure was “part of a public relations agenda and an attempt to embarrass Congressman Jefferson. The affidavit itself is just one side of the story which has not been tested in court,” Trout said in a statement.
I know it’s Mr. Trout’s obligation to zealously defend his client so I won’t get mad at him. That said, his client’s toast this time. Not even Perry Mason could get him off this time.
There goes Ms. Pelosi’s credibility when she rails about the “Republicans’ culture of corruption.”

What really struck me is the speed at which the alleged offenses of Rep. William Jefferson were referred to the House Ethics Committee. Remember this is the same ethics committee that still has not decided the fate of Washington Rep. James McDermott for having passed along a recording resulting from an “unlawful monitoring” of a phone call between Republican House Leadership back when Newt was Speaker.
They just can’t bury this fast enough in committee.

William Jefferson has demonstrated that the Culture of Corruption is bipartisan and not limited to Republicans as the Democratic leadership and the liberal media a few short weeks ago would have you believe. Will the Leadership be calling for Jefferson to Resign as the did for Tom Delay? and will Jefferson himself accept responsibility for his actions and accept the consequences like Duke Cunningham did? Somehow I doubt it. My guess is that Jefferson and the Democratic Leadership will attempt to protray him as the “victim” in this, perhaps employing the Race Card to achieve that objective.

Cold cash or sad when you think about it
