Bense vs. Bill Nelson?
It isn’t official yet but if I was a betting man, I’d put my money on that being the general election pairing for Florida’s U.S. Senate race. Here’s what the St. Petersburg Times’ Steve Bousquet wrote yesterday:
Bense went to Washington Monday to meet with senior adviser Karl Rove and other White House political staff members, who successfully encouraged Mel Martinez to run for the U.S. Senate last year. He also met with Republican national chairman Ken Mehlman and Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, who heads the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
Bense said Tuesday he received more encouragement to run. However, he received no promises of a primary endorsement. Back home, he sounded torn by conflicting emotions.
“I deep down think I’d make a good U.S. senator, but you have to have the fire in the belly, and that’s where I’m searching right now,” Bense told reporters at the state Capitol. He said he would decide in “the next week or 10 days” whether to run for the seat held by Sen. Bill Nelson, a first-term Democrat…
If Bense runs, he’ll win. It’s that simple. Florida is a very red state and Bense is well-liked even by Florida Democrats. Furthermore, Bill Nelson is ripe for defeat. Katherine Harris is the only Republican he’s capable of beating.
You can rest assured that talk of Bense running instead of Katherine Harris has Florida Democrats scared and the DNC upset. They know that Harris is the only Republican Bill Nelson can beat. If she isn’t the candidate, they know he’s toast.
Let’s hope that Mr. Rove is able to talk Bense into running. If he does, that guarantees GOP control of the Senate.
