I was hired in 1961 by the LAPD. I spent most of my 30 years in uniform working South Central and Metro.

Most all my training officers were WWII vets.
They were good guys, but no nonsense when it came to getting the job done. For the most part it was more than just a job, it was a life style.

Was it no wonder that Jack Webb chose The LAPD to model his TV show after.

We also had a nonsense Chief during that period. Parker was his name, some of you will remember that name. We also had a couple other great Chiefs. Chief Gates comes to the top of my list.

As I tenured on the department many of the new officers were Vietnam vets. These officers, for the most part, were another great group of men that came to the department looking for more than just a job. They too were poud to be a part of LAPD.

When SWAT was first formed the officers who were most instrumental in it becoming successful were the veterans from again WWII and Vietnam.

The pattern here is clear I think, especially when you look at the life experience of the present candidates.
Now that's not to say there isn't plenty of good men and women on the job and applying but when things go wrong, where has the spotlight ended up pointing at.
Correct, those candiidates who had to be taught to pass the entrance exam, and were certinally not recruited by other officers, but those who have agenda other than finding the best men and women.
Thank you,
RD Welts, Ret. LAPD
