Wachovia Bank Offering Statements In Spanish-Only

South Florida Business Journal reports: “Wachovia Bank said it is offering bank statements in Spanish, beginning Wednesday.”

And what message is that sending? Doesn’t matter if you can speak English or not, just as long as your money is green. And it doesn’t matter if you’re an illegal, just as long as you pay in legal tender. Wells Fargo knows the story.

Any retail customer with a Wachovia deposit account can sign up to receive bank statements in Spanish by calling (800) 922-4684 and hitting option 7.

Wachovia will print and issue its first Spanish-language statements Nov. 21. Existing and new retail customers have the option to receive statements and selected notices related to their checking, money market and savings accounts in Spanish.

We developed these statements after listening to our Spanish-speaking customers,” said Jorge Moller, manager for Wachovia’s Hispanic segment strategy. “They told us statements in their preferred language would help answer questions they sometimes have when they review their monthly statements.”

But Wachovia will not value the peso more than the U.S. dollar. At least not yet.

I wouldn’t mind if they offer bank statements in Spanish. It is not that surprising news to me. ATM machines offer Spanish language option, so why not bank statements. But some people really need to learn English if they can’t read their bank statements…

Not sure what the problem is. After all, 25% of the United States was under control of a Spanish-speaking country. Spanish speaking immigrants (illegal/legal) are all over this country and if printing information in Spanish on bank statements makes it easier for those that don’t speak Spanish/English than it just makes sense. Many of the American people I encounter on a daily basis don’t have an understanding of the English language and they are from here. Mexican immigrants that don’t speak adequate English don’t upset me half as much as the American citizens that can’t speak and communicate in English effectively.
