Primary Tidbits: A Few More Bites

1. Dan Weintraub, of the Sacto Bee, now has the feeling that Westly will pull this out. Posted at 12:02pm, yesterday

2. In Ventura County three term incumbent Judy Mikels has been fighting claims that she is not a good Republican (did not support Prop. 13, supported numerous bond measures, ran against Tom McClintock for State Senate, because, according to her, “Tom McClintock is an extremist”. Today the final mail hit.

A slate card called”Democratic Voters Choice” was sent to Dem homes. Only three picture had their pictures in it, Phil Angelides, Garamendi and Judy Mikels. In fact she had a quarter of a page in this “Democrat” slate card..she was “endorsed” along with Angelides, Garamendi, Bowen, Chiang, Lockyer, JERRY BROWN, Cruz Bustamante, Diane Feinstein and Jack O’Connell.

So, at the same time she is sending mail to GOP’ers that she is a conservative Republican, she is telling Democrats that is you can vote for Angelides and Jerry Brown, you will also love Judy Mikels.

Now you know why politics has a bad name, folks like Judy Mikels manipulating the voters. Yet, she is still unwilling to discuss her support for the tripling of the local landfill — we know telling the truth is not a Democrat value!

3. In San Luis Obispo we have this opportunity, this is a race to watch for Election Night:

San Luis Obispo voters have a unique opportunity to elect a conservative Treasurer/Tax Collector/Public Administrator this Tuesday, June 6. Matt Kokkonen, a Conservative Republican, is challenging the 29 year incumbent Democrat Frank Freitas for the position. The incumbent has run un-opposed for the last 28 years. Kokkonen was born in Finland and immigrated to the US by himself at the age of 16. As he states: “I am a legal immigrant and a proud US citizen.”

He has been married to Jean for 38 years and has 2 children. His son is a computer technician and his daughter is a graduate of the US Air Force Academy and Georgetown medical school and is now a Major stationed in Germany as a flight commander at a US Air Force Hospital. Matt Kokkonen has been a member of the SLO County Republican Central Committee for several years. He is endorsed by Assembly minority leader Kevin McCarthy, SLO City Council member Paul Brown, Atascadero Mayor Tom O’Malley and hundreds of others. His Web site is www.slotreasurer.com and email: matt@slotreasurer.com.

The San Luis Obispo newspaper, The Tribune has, of course, endorsed the incumbent Democrat. According to Kokkonen, “had the Tribune endorsed me, it would have been the kiss of death.” Matt has been a very active and outspoken Republican leader in the county and consequently has drawn the ire of the liberal paper even is this non-partisan race.

4. I knew that neither Michael Tenenbaum, nor Bob Larkin were serious candidates for office. Tenenbaum had a couple of thousand dollars worth of cable TV ads, lawn signs and sent just one mailer — telling about a free BBQ he was holding (very few showed up). He was seen today at a pizza joint in Thousand Oaks thanking his workers.

Larkin had no TV, lots of signs around town and no more than two mailers –. Not big deal. Wasted money that could have been used to defeat Democrats.

5. Looks like the total turn-in of absentee ballots for this election is approximately 40% — not a high figure!
