November 8th: California’s Special Election and Gov. Schwarzenegger’s Initiatives
We have a historic opportunity to vote for critical reforms.
TODAY, Californians will head to the polls to vote on several issues that shall dramatically affect both the political and economic future of our state.
(To enlarge, click on any of the images above. Then to save, right-click on the image.)
At this time, we reference our “mission statement” which served as our inaugural post when we launched this blog seven months ago.
On April 3, 2005, we wrote:
“THE GOAL of CaliforniaConservative.org is to organize, energize and evangelize all those who are dissatisfied with the status quo.
. . .To be clear, this blog has an agenda and we’re declaring it up front. It’s about supporting political candidates who represent our views, and criticizing those who don’t. It’s about winning elections. And defeating our opponents. It’s about ideology.”
The time has come for our collective voice to be heard.
The power of the people resides in the voting booth, so please join us in sending the message of reform to Sacramento by voting for Gov. Schwarzenegger’s special initiatives.
November 8, 2005: Ballot Propositions
Prop. 73: Abortion Notification (YES)
Prop. 74: Teacher Tenure/Education Reform (YES)
Prop. 75: Paycheck Protection (YES)
Prop. 76: State Spending Limit (YES)
Prop. 77: Redistricting (YES)
Prop. 78: Prescription Drug Program (YES)
Prop. 79: Prescription Drug Pricing (NO)
Prop. 80: State Electricity Regulation (NO)
Much has been written on the topics of Gov. Schwarzenegger, special interests, the economy and education in our state.
They chronicle the politics and culture of California, and today they stand for the record of what we’re fighting for.
Obviously, we’re providing special coverage of Props. 74, 75, 76 & 77, and we’re throwing the doors open to public debate.

The comments sections will be left open for general discourse.
And because we encourage everyone to actively participate by expressing their views and opinions, only remarks containing vulgarity shall be deleted. As always, we expect our readers to be respectful of one another.
NOTE: Please leave your comments pertaining to a Propositions at its respective post. (i.e. Have something to say about Prop. 77? Click on the numbered link above and then add your remarks) That way, readers will get your perspective in context.

Propositon 75 claims to be the paycheck protection act, and purports to grant union members and non-member agency fee payers the right to finally opt out of having their union dues used for poltical purposes against their will.
This is patently untrue. Read my analysis here.
So then what’s the real purpose of Prop. 75?
November 1st, 2005 at 9:47 pm
Of course, what you neglect to mention is that the burden falls onto the union member to DENY the use of their fees for political purposes. Prop 75 will change the burden to the union to obtain persmission from its members.
Tell me again why the California Teachers’ Association opposed the three-strikes law.

Jarrod,
Sounds devious. Perhaps you can answer the question yourself here. Also, having visited your website, we recognize that you’re against Prop. 74, too.
You can present your argument against that here.
Thanks.

Although the present redistricting system leaves much to be desired, I’m really surprised that you are recommending voting YES on 77. I would no more trust a California judge to do right by my interests than I would my worst enemy. At least the way it is now, there is some hope of recourse by changing the dynamics at the ballot box with the election of lawmakers who are responsible for drawing the lines.
When I worked for a Member of Congress in Maryland, the democrat power structure tried to redraw her District out of existence and we did a massive public education program to her constituents and inundated the State House with letters, picket lines, and generally very negative publicity towards those trying to pull the fast one. It not only worked, but in the next election cycle my boss got over 75% of the vote as a Republican in her District that was 11 to 1 democrat to republican in voter registration.

Squiggler,
Thanks for your remarks. Recognizing you to be a regular reader, we appreciate your feedback and respect the disagreement.
You have a good story. However, here’s why we’re recommending “yes.”
“At least the way it is now, there is some hope of recourse by changing the dynamics at the ballot box…”
Under ideal circumstances, that would be true. But the point is — it hasn’t happened. And what will shake people and politicians out of complacency? Redistricting will mix the game up. We need more than hope and prayer. We’ve been doing that for too long.
“…we did a massive public education program to her constituents and inundated the State House with letters, picket lines, and generally very negative publicity…”
With all due respect, this is California and the same tricks may not work. Our demographics and culture are different than almost all other states. Let’s remember, we were able to get rid off Gray Davis ONLY because he was doing such a poor job. He stunk. But consider that Arnold is already facing negative opinion polls for what? — taking action to reform the system which is, ostensibly, the reason he was elected.
Voters are fickle. Voters’ attention is short-term. The MSM and local evening news still dominates. And the special interest money has poured in — raising unprecedented amounts to defeat ALL of his initiatives.
In short, Prop. 77 may not be the best solution, but it’s doing what we want: shaking up the system and changing the status quo.

I think the layout may be a little too busy, but it’s hard to put my finger on why. Try increasing the margin width between columns a little, or changing the link color from red?
Admittedly I’ve only read over a couple posts, but from what I’ve seen I have to give you a hat tip and hope you continue to keep on top of things without falling into the ridiculous trap of vitriol that seems to have overtaken the conservative movement in the last 20 years or so.

I’ve got to disagree with you on Prop. 78 - I voted “NO” on all 3 of the last initiatives. The fact is Prop. 78 is every bit as useless and unnecessary as Prop. 79.

California Conservative:
I’m always on board the “shake ‘em up” boat. I guess this initiative frightens me because I keep thinking that this 3 judge panel will end up being the “retirement” home for the 9th Circuit judges. Gasp!
I think we who follow politics may be unfair to call it the “California” problem as the county voting map of California is certainly a whole lot more red than blue.
I’m much more a “national” politico, so local grass roots is not my strong point, but it seems getting back to basics is a good place to start on any level.
I know this is hard to believe and I was sort of flabbergasted when I first had the realization that in the 22 years I lived in San Diego county as a military wife and the 5 years I’ve lived in Riverside county since returning to California in 2000, I’ve never met a democrat that I knew was a democrat. San Diego was solid Republican when I lived there and out here, it is about the same. In 2004, every house on my street had either a “support the troops” or a “Bush” yard sign in their yard. I had picked up a “W stands for Women” sign somewhere and had it in my yard and twice I had someone ring my bell to ask where I got it, they wanted one too. From a strategy point of view, I look at these people as those who want to help in some way, but haven’t a clue how or what to do, other than a yard sign. There is no communication though. I’m in Mary Bono’s district, I can’t recall ever getting a newsletter from her or any campaign material. The only Arnold material I see comes from either your blog or an online newsletter I get from the Sacramento Republican party and I don’t even know how I got on their email list, but more power to them. With no Republican Senator to take the lead over the State party political direction on the national level, the senior Republican Member of the House should be filling that role. I don’t even know who that is and I pay attention. The average guys or gals don’t even know that they don’t know and that’s the Party’s fault, in my opinion. Arnold woke us up in the run up to the Special Election, but then there was no follow up to keep the people interested and Arnold and his machine, as good as they are, can’t do it all, nor should they have to.

I voted this way on all of these (absentee ballot), except for 78. Prop 78 seems pointless to me. If it’s voluntary to give prescription drug discounts to those who can’t afford it, why do the drug companies need a bill for that to happen? Why don’t they just do it?
If 75 passes, can the unions still use dues without written consent to pay back the massive debt they’re accruing trying to defeat it? That would be ironic.

The point of Prop 78 is to beat Prop 79. If Prop 78 gets *more* votes than 79, then 79 effectively fails. It’s easier to get people to vote for two “reform” measures than against one. (See comment 5.)

November 7th, 2005 at 10:54 pm
I am very conservative…but I still think that alot of what this special election has to say is way out of touch with the people.
1) I have heard lots of comments by our representatives and congreepeople of, “the labor unions run state politics yet only a small portion of the state is union employees,” well perhaps ladies and gentelmen this is something we should take up with our elected officials. Wether you voted for them or not they are still there representing their constituency (yes ladies and gentlemen that is ou and I)……if only a few people agree with what the labor unions are saying how can our REPRESNTATIVE officials be allowed to vote the way of the union. I guess what I am realy trying to say is that the house and senate need to grow some balls and stand up for the people they are representing instead of admiting defeat and giving up…I wouldn’t would you???? We the people are a force to be reckoned with….we got rid of one governor, why not force our representatives to represent us. If we restricted private business’s to having to have employees vote before the name of the company could be used for political purposes we would all raise issue with this violation of our civil liberties, why then are we going to pass a law and create more beuracracy in teling the unuions they need to do this. As a matter if law in the state of California, the union must allow its members to opt out……if the employee isn’t smart enough to opt out then perhaos they deserve to give up that part of their paycheck….call it union Darwin Fees.
2) Teacher quality in the state of california will continue to decline as long as the wages are not in line with the COLA. If you own, have bought or sold or even rent a house in the state of California you notice ever month how the cost of living in this state has skyrocketed, yet what are teacher wages?
I will tell you what teacher wages are…a shame….FIVE years of college and you to can have a job that starts out paying around $30,000 a year……I don’t know about you but thats not going to buy a lot of house in my neighberhood. Well lets extend the Tenure out to five years that ought to help with teacher quality right?
WRONG…..the people who are “bad” teachers are going to do what “bad” anthings do…they are going to fly under the radar and then they are going to continue to be “bad” teachers…..in the mean time the schools will intentionally keep hiring people from out of state on emergency credentials (thats so they never climb the pay scale) and keep turning them over every five years….sounds like a great way to keep ‘GOOD” people coming into the profession. Again here we are at that lovely crossroads….perhaps the administration should become more proactive and a little less political… school districts are very political institutions to work for. You as members of your local school district are 100% responsible for these problems…you elect the school board…and when was the last time you attended a school board meeting???? Oh yeah and even a tenured teacher is evaluated by their administrator……..not guranteed a job for life.
3) Redistricting…sounds great. Whoever is gonna do it….they will do it to favor themselves…perhaps holding our elected representatives accountable for their voting records and even knowing what they are doing in Sacramento is in order. Have ou ever watched C-Span….its kind of interesting to see how they get up and leave so they don’t have to vote on some things…. how about the go to work, do their job (represent their constituants and then go home) and quit playing all teh stupid political games that prevent thenm from fighting for their people.
I surely hope that Arnolds intentions are good…… but some of his implimentations seem a little rushed to me…..perhaos we could have waited for the next election and let things develop a little. I am all for balanced budgets, efficiency and quality in every aspect of our government, but creating new nightmares while trying to fix old ones still ends up with nightmares. There is no reall clear answer to the probems this state is facing, but I do notice that workers comp as not been put on the ballot nor has energ reform, I think these are things that could help put california back on top….imagine our state being on the leading edge of sustainable alternative energy ( I know I am not looking forward to 1 70% increase in my natural gas bill this winter) and perhaps creating more jobs (cutting workers comp costs) would work, but not without holding OUR GOVERNMENT reposnsible for what it does. Write your representatives and tell them what you think they should be doing for ou…if they don’t respond write them again and have two simillarly minded people do teh same with exponential growth they will be forced gto reckon with the public that put them in office.
I apologize for any typo’s its late and I really shoudl be sleeping…
GOD BLESS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE…
