I think that one of the reasons the death penalty is not the deterrent it might be is the curiously odd way it's implemented: 25 years for Mr Williams? Hardcore criminals can look forward to life after murder in a nice regimented society, no worries, no cares. Not what we'd choose, but for most of them, I don't think it's all that big a step down. If it's administered at all, it should only be in cases where there's a preponderance of evidence (as in the OJ case), and it should come within 24 hours of the verdict. I could go for a moratorium, if indeed that really meant no possibility of parole.
