Book Review: “Saints” Fend Off “Snakes” in Boxer’s Political Novel
Sen. Boxer has written a political novel that’s coming out soon. To say that it’s an objective look at politics is pure fiction.
Here’s what the Washington Times’ Jennifer Harper says about her novel:
Mrs. Boxer, who opposed the nomination of conservative Judge John G. Roberts Jr. as chief justice of the Supreme Court and questions Harriet Miers’ qualifications to replace Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, has had to answer to critics who wonder where fiction stops and agenda begins. The discord was fueled by advance materials and sneak peeks at the 320-page book, published by San Francisco-based Chronicle Books. “You need to be the conscience of the liberals, even if you’re only a voice in the wilderness,” an aide tells Sen. Ellen Fischer, the book’s very Democratic heroine.
It’s interesting that Ms. Harper would mention that it’s difficult to tell “where fiction stops and agenda begins.” I’ve often wondered whether Sen. Boxer, in reciting Democratic talking points, knew whether that day’s talking points spoke to her agenda or if they were pure fiction. It appears they might be both.
The Sacramento Bee offers perhaps the best critical review: “Suffice it to say, this effort reads more like a cross between a bad romance novel and a soap opera script. The Congressional Record might be more entertaining. And it’s free.”
At least you can be assured that the Congressional record is an accurate document.
