Schwarzenegger: ‘No’ to Gay Textbook Bill

(via Newsmax)

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will veto legislation that would require California textbooks to contain information about the contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in American history, according to a spokesman.

The bill, which has already been passed by the Senate and awaits a vote in the Assembly, seeks to recognize “the contributions of the LGBT community in the social science curriculum in the same way the state has come to recognize the achievements of women and minorities,” the Sacramento Bee reports.

But Schwarzenegger spokesman Adam Mendelsohn told the Bee: “The governor believes that school curriculum should include all important historical figures, regardless of orientation. However, he does not support the legislature micromanaging curriculum.”

Schwarzenegger earlier angered gay activists by vetoing a bill legalizing same-sex marriage.

The textbook bill was introduced by Sen. Sheila Kuehl, a [gay] Democrat from Los Angeles, who argued: “Silence and biased messages about lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender people only promotes negative stereotypes and this, in turn, can lead to discrimination, harassment and violence.”

But Randy Thomasson, president of the Campaign for Children and Families, says the legislation is “a deceptively written bill that would do tremendous harm to our children.

“The core of the bill is an absolute mandate requiring all textbooks, all instructional materials and all school-sponsored activities to positively portray transsexuals, bisexuals and homosexuals as role models for children as young as kindergarten.”[Read more]

I wonder why Democrats in the legislature are so interested in the private sex lives of other people.

I heard the American Teachers Association wants to ban the word ‘ocean’ because inner city poor folk who cannot make to see the ocean will have hurt feelings.

Before you go and make out the Governator to be a hero, think this thing through a little bit. With this bill, we could finally get Jesus into the California curriculum as a prominent gay historical figure: “Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.” (John 13:23) We already teach about some of His many accomplishments, such as the Crusades, the Thirty Years War, and the Inquisition, but now we’d actually be able to give credit where credit is due. Plus we’d be able to get Intelligen Design in there as one of His many contributions to science. Once again, Arnold showing his true (liberal) colors.

Let’s be obvious for a minute and let children be children for a while, can’t we? Is it so much to ask to leave hetero/homo/trans/bisexuality out of the story until they’ve outgrown tricycles? Sheesh.

  5. AthlonGuy Says:

Neither Dem Gov. candidate Steve Westly nor Phil Aneglides have said anything on this. This says a lot considering how overwhelmingly unpopular this gay textbook law is. They are afraid of the gay lobby. Cowering in fear.
