3. Thanks for a fine letter. But you are too kind. I propose a boycott, such as that against Target/Walmart over the censoring of the Salvation Army in 2004. It worked; our local Walmart has let the Army back this year. If a store can’t honor Christmas, what’s the point in a gift chosen from them? you offend, you lose.

5. Wow i didnt know WalMart didnt let the Salvation Army in 2004 but they were at all 4 of our WalMarts and our Sams Club. But anyways i am an Atheist however i have no problem with the Christmas issue. I even signed the petition. I celebrate Christmas just not for the religious aspect. I dont believe in removing God from things because they have always been there i understand what this country was founded on. I say keep up the fight to keep Christmas alive

6. Frankly, I think all of this Christmas scare is being blown out of proportion. I’m a liberal but I celebrate Christmas as do almost every liberal I know [except the Jewish ones]. I think it’s a bogeyman fear. This is a Christian country. Christmas will not just disappear. More importantly the biggest problem I see with Christmas is that it is a capitalist holiday more than a religious one. Most people care only about the gifts they will get.

7. First I direct my comments to Jodi from Palmdale. I am proud that you have made your comments like a mature adult that relizes what Christmas , and this nations founding is all about and I thank you. Next I agree with Matt. All to many people and Merchants have turned Christmas into a commercial time to save their bottom line. In some years past, if not most of them, if it weren’t for Christmas..their bottom line would be in the sewer. The Two things that made me very sad was that a Huge chain store would chase the “Bell Ringing Santas from the front of their stores and proceeded to later fire an employee for having slipped and wished a customer “Merry Christmas” because the customer did so first…out of auto reflex. Until these big shots who think they hold all the cards and customers will rush to them if they continue this anti-Christmas ban..got news for them. Many people have done as I, my “BIG” family and several friends alone have shopped “ONLY” at small stores and found ourselves hearing Christmas Carols and Merry Christmas Greetings…What a Refreshing feeling. We felt a good feeling and when one has good feelings they spend more, which I feel is a big mistake as it only contributes to the commercialism attached to Christmas for all too long. A gift or two from the heart should suffice. I could care less if I get anything..I give to those in need especially little children and visit Nursing homes to visit with the lonely and those left there by their so-called children whom hardly ever visit them. Giving to others doesn’t mean buying expensive and many gifts..it’s just giving of one’s self to those who need it that counts. I feel good with that. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

8. Oh Jodi, about he Salvation Army…it was the Target store CHain that banned the Santas. WalMert invited the Santas to their stores and donated to them. This year WalMart increased their donations…but they will nor permit thier employees to wish anyone “Merry Christmas” To me it the spirit of good will towards all men that as it has been said; “Every day should be like Christmas”

9. Well then, alongside the ACLU, I would suggest the Christmas crowd begin attacking the White House. Mr. and Mrs Bush, the current occupants of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue sent THIS card out this year:

   “best wishes for a holiday season of hope and happiness.”

   NO Mention of Christmas, only HOLIDAY so I’m SURE the Christmas is being marginalized crowd will take up the attack on the President and his wife am I right?

   I won’t hold my breath….

    Admittedly, we were a little disappointed by not seeing a “Merry Christmas” on the card.

    But you left out what appears written right below the card’s gilded President seal.

    The Lord is my strength and my shield;
    In him my heart trusts;
    So I am helped, and my heart exults,
    And with my song I give thanks to Him.”
    Psalm 28:7 (RSV)

    After that, the reference to “holiday season” was taken in context.

11. Touche California Conservative. The Card did say holiday instead of Xmas however i agree it had the God reference so it changes the dynamics of things. I also want to point out that the White House has a CHRISTMAS tree not a Holiday tree. We have a place here that says happy holidays instead of MErry Christmas however they also say God Bless you in the same sentence so i find it interesting. And i am not offended when people say God bless you to me and i am an Atheist. Everyone is entitled to believe or not believe and i have no right to silence someone who believes. I for one say Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. and Thanks George for pointing out the Target issue. I was gonna post about that today i didnt think it was Walmart. And as for saying MErry Christmas our Walmarts the employess say MErry Christmas at least some of them do. I have shoppped since Thanksgiving at 4 different Walmarts and been told Merry Christmas as well as Happy Holidays at all of them.

Christmas is above all else a holy day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and as a Christian, I find it offensive that the secular humanist are trying to take our holiday away from us, and Christmas has been sanitized in schools and public squares, in malls and parades where Santa’s OK, Jesus Christ is NOT. “Jingle Bells” rocks, but forget about “Silent Night.” What’s next…calling the Christ Child…”The Winter Infant?”
    Some hope to assure the nation that it’s all right to say “Merry Christmas,” but some will only say “Happy Holiday.” I would like to say, I am a champion of, live Nativity scenes, Christmas trees, greeting cards and salutations offering compelling evidence that December 25th is still a religious holiday — not a violation of separation of church and state.

15. I believe the way you phrase this that you think it is just atheist who are opposing this, what about the thousands of other religions that DO exist and do live in America? 18. I only wish my only, or my biggest problem in life was that someone didn’t say “Merry Christmas” and instead wished me a “Happy Holiday”. Anyone who is concerned by this issue to the point where they are signing petitions really needs to focus their attention on solving a real problem.

I am an atheist, and I am happy to celebrate Christmas as a holiday. The Christian would see it as more than just a holiday - and that is fine. 22. Good to see the Christians allowing both sides of the story to remain. Why was my post removed? None of it was offensive. I also see that you removed the post before my first post, which went even more into the history of Christmas. So, it’s okay to have a one-sided article, but not to allow any counterpoints? Nice way to win your argument. I think it’s time for some author to grow up a little. I’ll say it again. We are no longer in the 1500’s…the universe does not revolve around you. Get some maturity and let’s think about this like adults.

    Don’t you think that would be a little too much to ask? The issue is clear: Christians are clearly being persecuted when retailers choose not to use the word Christmas. Jews, Muslims, Buddhists et. al are either not being persecuted when retailers chose not to use their respective holiday names, or are simply not important enough to be of concern.

27. This is a pretty disgusting site. The “reason for the season” has pagan roots, so there would be a winter celebration without christianity. The fact that you guys want to force everyone to participate in a religious celebration is weird and unhealthy. Seriously, stop fighting to make everyone live by your standards, and give people some slack so they can live.

I know it’s not politically correct, but if your faith is shaken by someone wishing you an inclusive “Happy Holidays” instead of an exclusive “Merry Christmas”, then you really have no faith at all. Perhaps if you can’t find people to oblige your personal religious beliefs at a Mall or Department Store, you might consider going to Church.

29. As soon as Muslims start referring to Ramadan as just a “holiday,” I’ll consider adding Christianity into the dust bin of PC rhetoric.

    December 25 is Christmas. Celebrating the birth of Jesus is the reason for the holiday. That is the historical significance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas If you want to celebrate shaving your legs, call it what you want.

    Oh, and Barry, while you’re helping Ian shave, maybe you can both read up on some history. If you think God doesn’t belong in America, then the words of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and even JFK, need to be erased from history.
