You people are stupid. Retailers no longer wish customers “Merry Christmas” because not everyone celebrates Christmas. Ever hear of Hanukkah?

I’m not against Christmas because I’m Atheist I’m against Christmas because Christianity isn’t the only religion in America. Stop making the mistake that America was founded on Christian Ideals, Jefferson the man that wrote our constitution himself was a unitarian, and a Deist. What about the Jewish/Hindu/Buddhist/Muslim worshippers? are they to be left at the wayside while the rest of the country continues with it’s business? I’ve always done my best to respect everybodies point of view, and for some reason Christians are the only ones who refuse to respect mine, I’m seen as a social pariah. This is it, this is the most ignorant, ill-informed piece of material I’ve ever seen in my life. Christmas is NOT an “American” heritage, it’s a Christian Heritage. Inform yourselves you ignorant asses.

I’m an atheist and I love christmas. it’s not like ham, presents and an indoor light up tree are particularly jesusie. I think this is a made up concern by folks who are offended by the idea that not everyone observes christmas.

I’m an atheist and I celebrate Christmas for the same reason secular Jews observe Yom Kippur; it’s a tradition. However, not everyone shares my feelings and therefore in the winter months, I wish people a happy holiday to make certain I am including them.

Not only do you insist on forcing your religious views on everyone around you, but you practically sh*t your pants when someone says ‘happy holidays?” What the hell is wrong with trying to appeal to more people? What’s wrong with trying to make sure you’re not offending anyone?
Are you seriously THAT crazy? Do you really think it’s that important? There aren’t any other issues that deserve this much attention from you? No, this must be the most important issue. Forget the billion or so people who are starving to death as we speak. Forget the millions in Africa stricken with aids, who will only perpetuate the disease because the pope tells them that condoms are the problem. No no, those are trivial matters. What’s really important is what the minimum wageslave at the mall who honestly couldn’t care less how well your shopping spree - scratch that- holiday is going.

Actually, most atheists really don’t care about Christmas. It’s kind of off-putting how commercialized it has become in our society, but I guarantee you there are far too many people, atheists included, who are making too much money off of the Christmas-time shopping boom. Holidays that significantly affect sales and were adapted from pagan ones anyway are not going anywhere soon.

Christmas is the greatest time of the year. Partially because of celebrating Jesus’ birth but many Christians forget Christmas is just as rooted in paganism as it is Christianity.

There is nothing offensive about “Happy Holidays” nor “Merry Christmas” nor “Merry X-mas”. Quit wearing made up persecution as a badge of honor.
Quit over analyzing everything and quit being such prudes.

Most atheists really couldn’t care less what is said to us as we take advantage of the awesome sales resulting from the bastardization of Christmas. It doesn’t bother me one bit. But there are certain people that I think would include a lot of those in these comments that like to say it forcefully, seemingly trying to make a point. Its those people that get on my nerves.

Too many religious people seem to think that atheists are crazy anarchist evil people, but quite honestly every atheist that I know is a really passive person that has the utmost respect for other peoples’ right to believe whatever they want. They expect no more than the same in return.

and contrary to popular belief, this country was originally settled to get away from protestant Europe. Most of our founding fathers, whether religious or atheist believed highly in secularism. Its because of this that I have my only beef with religion. If churches are going to be speaking out and using their voices to influence politics, then they need to be taxed just like every other business.

As soon as Muslims start referring to Ramadan as just a “holiday,” I’ll consider adding Christianity into the dust bin of PC rhetoric.

December 25 is Christmas. Celebrating the birth of Jesus is the reason for the holiday. That is the historical significance. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas If you want to celebrate shaving your legs, call it what you want.

Oh, and Barry, while you’re helping Ian shave, maybe you can both read up on some history. If you think God doesn’t belong in America, then the words of Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and even JFK, need to be erased from history.

I know it’s not politically correct, but if your faith is shaken by someone wishing you an inclusive “Happy Holidays” instead of an exclusive “Merry Christmas”, then you really have no faith at all. Perhaps if you can’t find people to oblige your personal religious beliefs at a Mall or Department Store, you might consider going to Church.

This is a pretty disgusting site. The “reason for the season” has pagan roots, so there would be a winter celebration without christianity. Don’t you think that would be a little too much to ask? The issue is clear: Christians are clearly being persecuted when retailers choose not to use the word Christmas. Jews, Muslims, Buddhists et. al are either not being persecuted when retailers chose not to use their respective holiday names, or are simply not important enough to be of concern.

Good to see the Christians allowing both sides of the story to remain. Why was my post removed? None of it was offensive. I also see that you removed the post before my first post, which went even more into the history of Christmas. So, it’s okay to have a one-sided article, but not to allow any counterpoints? Nice way to win your argument. I think it’s time for some author to grow up a little. I’ll say it again. We are no longer in the 1500’s…the universe does not revolve around you. Get some maturity and let’s think about this like adults.

Christmas is above all else a holy day to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and as a Christian, I find it offensive that the secular humanist are trying to take our holiday away from us, and Christmas has been sanitized in schools and public squares, in malls and parades where Santa’s OK, Jesus Christ is NOT. “Jingle Bells” rocks, but forget about “Silent Night.” What’s next…calling the Christ Child…”The Winter Infant?”
Some hope to assure the nation that it’s all right to say “Merry Christmas,” but some will only say “Happy Holiday.” I would like to say, I am a champion of, live Nativity scenes, Christmas trees, greeting cards and salutations offering compelling evidence that December 25th is still a religious holiday not a violation of separation of church and state.
