Kinda like any liberal group, once they figure out they can have extra money and their base won't care. I've been eligible for AARP membership for nearly 1-1/2 decades, but decided long before I was eligible I would never join them because they work at cross-purposes to 1) what is good for the nation, and 2) what is good for their membership in general. Fortunately, now there are alternatives to AARP. I just wish one of them didn't tie their discount to turning in an AARP card - some of us were smart enough to never have joined. I’ve been eligible for AARP membership for nearly 1-1/2 decades, but decided long before I was eligible I would never join them because they work at cross-purposes to 1) what is good for the nation, and 2) what is good for their membership in general.
