Feinstein: Another Brick In The Wall?

The S.F. Chronicle reports: “Organizers of the gay pride parade held in the city every June announced Thursday that [California Senator] Feinstein was the winner of this year’s ‘Pink Brick’ award, a dubious honor bestowed on the public figure a San Francisco group decides has done the most to damage the gay rights cause. President Bush and talk show host Laura Schlessinger were the previous winners.”

Well, at least you’ve gotta be pretty important to win this colorful award.

Joey Cain, president of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Pride Committee, said Feinstein was nominated for the prize for telling reporters the morning after Bush’s re-election that progress on the gay marriage front “has been too much, too fast, too soon.”

No great offense here. This is not a strong dissenting opinion, or a clear opposition. Even openly-gay Senator Barney Frank advised the current S.F. Mayor Gavin Newsom to put the brakes on; advice which the arrogant young leader rebuffed.

Feinstein has long been a champion of gay issues, as evidenced by her appointment of gay and lesbian aides while she was mayor and her vote as a senator against the federal Defense of Marriage Act,” says James Hormel, a gay San Francisco philanthropist who served as U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg in the Clinton administration.

With all this said, one can only hope that Feinstein doesn’t give too much added weight to her special interest supporters. There’s much more to the great state of California than San Francisco.

[...] And, evidently, it’s okay to do so. There’s no uproar from the usually outraged homosexual activists in Hollywood or elsewhere. There’s no indignant posturing from Jesse and his Rainbow Coalition. The ACLU isn’t clamoring, despite it’s NAMBLA clientele. San Francisco’s very own Feinstein, Boxer and Pelosi aren’t worried about the gay bash. Why’s that? Because Foley is a Republican, and it’s time to play politics. As Richard Simmons would say, “Get with the program, people.” [...]
